Recap of School Board Meeting: We didnt get the answer I was expecting, which was We dont have any money to purchase textbooks. We were basically told that Kentucky adopted the Common Core Standards before there were textbooks even written as curriculum for the teachers/students to use. As of todays date, we were advised that it would still be an estimated 8 - 14 months before the elementary math textbooks were finished and available for purchase. The board was very receptive to our concerns and expressed that they share the same concerns as well. Mr. Beningfield offered a great deal of praise for the teachers and administrators that have the difficult task of researching and finding materials that align with the Common Core Standards in order to ensure that our students are taught what is required. I think the Board shares also our opinion that it was careless of a state to adopt a new education standard in which theres no existing curriculum available for purchase to ensure the success of our students. Another point made tonight was that up until about 7 years ago, the school systems received funding from the state for textbooks in the amount of roughly $90,000 annually. Prior to attending tonights school board meeting, I emailed 4 state legislators as well as the governor of Kentucky, expressing my displeasure of the Common Core standards and lack of available materials. I will email them again now that I know that Kentucky apparently removed textbook funding from their annual budget and stress how important it is for them to put it back in. How can students be expected to excel in school if they arent given the opportunity? Why dont you contact the legislators as well? Click here to find your Kentucky legislators. Email them ALL - Democrat or Republican. It doesnt matter. They all need to hear our voices. lrc.ky.gov/legislators.htm
