Recently, I shared a post from the newly formed The Australian Unemployment Union. Afterwards, I wrote to them to ask who and what they are and do. I asked if I could share their reply with you. Owen, who responded to my query also advises that well be able to read more about the AUU in Green Left Weekly soon, because an article will appear which will be more in depth. If you are unemployed, or know someone who is, this is a good chance to get organised in the face of increasing hostility from a government looking for someone to blame and punish for their own faults! This is what Owen wrote: Hello Christine, Thanks for interest in the AUU. The AUU started around the beginning of the year after we realised there was no group representing the Unemployed in any meaningful way. Especially now with the recent expansion of the work for the dole, representation for unemployed workers is more needed than ever. Our basic aim at the AUU is to defend the interests of the unemployed and give them a voice within Australian society. The fact that the Newstart rate of $510 per fortnight is less than half of what is needed to live above the poverty line. We are based in Melbourne (although we have members in Adelaide, Sydney) and we are not affiliated with any political party. The Union is run by a community group of interested unemployed people. Hopefully that covers all your questions. If you have any more please ask.
