Recently TEA was approached by a nonprofit called HOPE Street Group to be part of a collaborative effort in TN aimed at impacting education policy that affects our classrooms. In the past HOPE Street has partnered with our colleagues/members of the Kentucky Education Association (KEA) to do teacher engagement work and we have learned that the collaborative work done with KEA and other stakeholders was productive and beneficial in efforts to increase teacher input regarding education policy. This new partnership in TN will include TEA, the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) and Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE). TEA perceives this as a way to elevate educator voices and improve teacher leadership opportunities through the Hope Street Group Teacher Fellowship. Hope Street Group will select a cadre of talented teachers later this fall to participate in the 12-month fellowship, which will commence in early 2015. Fellows will be given the opportunity to attend professional development trainings, engage with their colleagues and collect data and feedback from teachers. Ultimately, we aim for these Teacher Fellows to be an additional avenue of change at the local and state level to further fuel the issues that our Association has been sharing with community and policy makers. TEA will be active in this endeavor and the fellows selected for the program will represent a diverse group of teachers from across the state. We will be informing teachers who are interested in learning more about applying to the fellowship later this month, meanwhile please visit: hopestreetgroup.org.
