Recently Tommy and I were discussing todays music and how some artist can be so blatantly vulgar with their lyrics. How the vulgarity did nothing to improve the song or the point. Tommy said it all has to do with the First Amendment (The Freedom of Speech Amendment) I said I understand the freedom of speech concept but at some point in time you have to consider morality as well. What are we teaching our children? With the multitude of ways a child can hear music it is no longer totally feasible for a parent to be able to monitor and restrict vulgar music from their child. No matter how hard a parent tries the child will still be able to hear it. To make a long story short, Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer this weekend commented on the fact that he is not a catholic but was impressed with a statement made by the residing Pope. Just because you have the right to say something doesnt mean it is right to say it. This statement made a light bulb go off and expressed my feelings exactly. I think that at some point we as a nation will have to stand up to the vulgarity and go back to a nation of the majority rules. I do not mean that we should start censoring the freedom of speech but should have a check point in there somehow. If an individual wants to be vulgar with their lyrics then fine let it only be heard on pay for radio. Just like movies are rated and children arent allowed to watch certain movies due to content so should they not be allowed to listen to certain music. If a song has an R or about rating it shouldnt be allowed to play on public radio. Maybe I am wrong I dont know but I do know that each time I hear a song playing and the F word is spit out like someone singing God Bless America I cringe. I feel sorry for our children who will grow up with no moral leaders to follow. Rant over
