Recently a video (circa 2010) of former Miami Heat and current Detroit Pistons Head Coach and Basketball Operations has been circulating throughout the virtual world regarding his stance on youth basketball. In the video which was filmed at Miami Heat Coaches Clinic - Coach Van Gundy points out the difference between WINNING GAMES and DEVELOPMENT. To further expound Van Gundys point, youth players whose team that press throughout the game aka kill the man with the ball will suffer as they move to the next level where BALL-YOU-MAN principles are taught and expected. Whereas on the offensive end teams that press all day usually struggle in the half court environment primarily due the lack of ability fundamental SKILLS (i.e passing, pivoting, shooting, and IQ). This is evident as players from across the water who are taught fundamentals as a youth seem to excel in the United States largely due to their ability to MASTER the fundamentals.
