Recently a visitor to our Facebook page inquired about the value of Beanie Babies. While these plush pals were certainly rock stars in the 1990s, their values have not risen — as many collectors had hoped — in the years since the craze faded. Which makes them a good example of the #1 rule in antiques and collectibles: Collect what you love. That way, regardless of market conditions the items will have value to you. In a Jan. 14 Heritage Auction blog post, Kelly Kopa, a staffer at Heritage, expresses this point in recounting her own experience: Memoirs of a Collector’s Daughter: The Sad Truth of the Beanie Baby Supply and Demand. I think many people can relate to Ms. Kopa, at one time or another in their collecting adventures.
