Recently on my newsfeed, Ive been seeing a lot of people asking why people are so outraged by whats happening in Gaza, and not batting an eyelid about ISIS and their rising atrocities against innocent civilians. The fact of the matter is that if we value our humanity, we will be outraged at ANY atrocity against our fellow humans, without caveat. The death toll may be higher in Iraq, but the situation in Gaza has been steadily deteriorating for years, even generations. Whether its the crucifixion of religious minorities, or bombing of hospitals and schools, it is unjustifiable. It is inhumane. But how do we measure which cause is more worthy of our time and attention? We dont. Compassion is not a finite resource, and one life/death is not worth more than another. Although in this case, the caption to this specific picture (many thanks to the incredible storytelling powers of Humans of New York) refers to Iraq, it represents more than that. It represents the millions of innocent civilians - Iraqi, Palestinian, Syrian, Rohingya, Sudanese, and so many more - who did nothing to begin the violent war games being played out around them, but inevitably pay the price. Enough.
