Recently recd msg from Dr. Joanne Yatvin, former president, American Council, Teachers of English and a REAL teacher (for those who may need an example): Don, Im sorry not to have replied sooner, but I had a lot on my plate a week ago, and then forgot about it. I did read David Brooks essay when I got your message and, again, today. I feel that he wasnt very clear in explaining Montaigne; at least not to me. But I understood his description of Johnson very well, perhaps because I think Im more like him. Its not always easy or fun to be the outlier--but you know that, too. Still, is it worth being alive if youre not trying to make the world around you a better place for everyone? Yes, I like having a nice house, plenty to eat, and enough money to spend on small luxuries, but I dont envy millionaires or celebrities. I believe that most of them bought their status for a price Im unwilling to pay: integrity. Have you ever read the medieval play,Everyman? The main character knew it was time for him to die. but was afraid to go to his grave alone. So he asked several friends, each representing a different human characteristic or possession, but they all turn him down, and he has to go alone. When he finally reaches his grave in despair, Good Deeds is there waiting and goes with him. Im not religious or superstitious, but in a way I believe that story is true. Joanne
