Recently there was a Facebook post that indicated that the Crestwood Police Department had issued a resident a $500 citation for “Feeding Birds.” This lead to speculation that the resident had a bird feeder or was simply “Feeding Birds.” Several residents became concerned and asked the police department if this citation had been issued and wanted clarification as to what the offense was. The police department had received numerous complaints from citizens about a residence, where the yard was unkept including hanging tarps, an abandon pool, lots of debris and the fact that food was continually left out and was attracting numerous wild animals including raccoons and possums. The code enforcement officer had contacted the homeowners on several occasions to rectify the problem, however no corrective action was taken by the homeowner. On April 30, 2014, our Code Enforcement officer issued a citation for “Littering a street, alley, ditch, parkway, public or private place.” The fine for this violation was $500 and was due 5-10-2014 or the homeowner could appear at a hearing on 6-12-2014. The homeowner issued a money order on 5-9-2014 and wrote “For feeding the birds,” on the money order. Since then, the police department has issued another citation on 9-24-2014 at the same residence for “Unsafe Building or Dilapidated Conditions.” The police department has since dropped that ticket as the homeowner is in the process of making repairs, however we will continue to monitor the improvements. The Code Enforcement Division is responsible for ensuring Crestwood’s properties are maintained to the standards as described within the Municipal Code. These standards and regulations are employed to maintain the appearance, safety and quality of life within the Village’s neighborhoods.
