Recharge vs. Discharge For most us business owners one of the hardest things to do is discipline ourselves in working on our businesses instead of working in them. When we work in them we only can work on them after hours so home life and any type balance is out the window. We are always expending energy, doing the work necessary to keep the business afloat. We rarely, if ever take time off and certainly can’t get away from the company or our responsibilities long enough to re-energize ourselves. Does this sound familiar? I would bet if it does you have no hobbies or activities outside of work. Slowing down is always just around the corner or on the other side of the next deal…..right? Wrong! If we are not careful our families could end up abandoning us and all could be lost. Life and business are getting tougher and tougher. Competition is stiff, and getting more fierce and relentless each day as it seeks to gain what we have worked so long to achieve and wants to take what we are working so hard to keep. So how can we slow down long enough to get away from the whirlwind and recharge and reengage? How do we stop the madness without losing momentum? First I would say identify the discharging in your life. Be specific and write them down. Ask yourself why you are pursuing whatever it is that zap’s your time efforts and energy and be honest. Most people are so busy "making a living" that they never really "make a life." Have you ever seen a dog chase a car? It’s pointless because when the car stops moving the game is over and there is no reward. The dog moves to the next moving object. Or how about the old story about the guy working so hard to cut down the trees and never took time to sharpen the saw. No reasonable person would attempt to cut down a forest of trees without ever stopping to go back and sharpen the very tool being used to get the job done. Stopping long enough to sharpen your saw helps us become more effective and efficient. Why is it so hard to make ourselves stop and rest? Why is it so difficult to truly apply Psalm 46:10, which reads "Be still, and know that I am God." Why do we seem to feel like the world will stop on its axis if we are not doing something every moment of the day?
