Recommended: 1994 was when I first heard of Ebola from reading The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, which documents the origins and first known case of the virus. The 1st chapter is the scariest thing Ive ever read. It sounded like science fiction (a virus that liquidates your internal organs and causes your stomach lining to tear with an audible noise??). But its fact, which is why Ebola is all over the headlines now. If you read that one chapter, I think its hard to arrive at any other conclusion than that we should be taking all measures necessary to quarantine it. This is especially true when (like us) your children are in the most at-risk segment of our population - hospital nurses. And right now, Im fairly pleased that neither I nor my co-workers have to return to Dallas for business meetings anytime soon.
