Reconciliation is Indispensable: (Where South Sudan has failed) South Sudan is currently failing, which has already exacerbated a disgruntled, tired and suffering people enduring a system non-reflective of SPLMs Marxist ideology. Our way of life is unrepresentative of the one the liberation struggle was fought for; the rich and poor divide is expansive and ever-growing, people are neglected basic rights such as healthcare and education, the justice system is feeble and security is poor due to an undisciplined, divided and neglected national army. With the current conflict a number of solutions have been proposed including but not exclusive to confederation, federalism etc. Ultimately, the majority (including politicians) against the current Government of South Sudan, propose regime change at the core (change of system). From my own interactions and observations, I can conclude that those who propose these changes gloss over the problems underneath the main layer, ignoring the internal issues, thus ignoring the root of the problem. Rebellions are primarily grievance-driven or at least rebel leaders will use grievance as a guise for rebellion. Rebellions in many cases can also be resource-driven as seen in the case of Sierra Leone and the diamonds. In the case of South Sudan, if one looks at the series of events and all the available evidence, it can be interpreted that grievance is used as a tool to legitimise the unconstitutional overthrow of President Salva Kiir, but that is not the topic of my status. Its not a matter of praise nor an attempt to condone him nor his militias actions, but Riek Machar did attempt with the South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission, which was sadly but predictably blown out the water by the SPLM. Again it can be said that Machars actions with a National Reconciliation Commission was pretty much a political ploy just like his crocodile tears during the apology regarding Bor Massacre in 1991. Coupled with his history of back and forth with the North and South Sudans (political football so to speak) - hes unreliable and trustworthy; a leopard never changes its spots, a snake will always be a snake. SPLM and Khartoum have both committed considerable atrocities. But where has that accountability been? Where has the admission been? Where has the compensation been? Regarding Northern Sudan, ICC indicted Bashir just for crimes committed in the Darfur Region, not so much for the genocide in South Sudan nor that in the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states. Where is our compensation? I suppose our compensation or form of apology is our liberation... but only to be under those who are feeling a sense of entitlement to everything because they fought for x amount of years or those who have taken the dirty habits from Khartoum with them to Juba? Without admission and then accountability, victims cannot forgive, therefore let go of the grudges pinning them to the pain and anger which came from their wretched treatment. Any solution to South Sudans issues should consider issues from the bottom right to the top and include the primary contenders - the civilians. The insincerity that comes from those who said they fought a just cause but want to be paid back ten-fold. The sheer ignorance and inconsideration of the civilians who have fought in the war, offered to the SPLA in their times of need, sacrificed their lives because they were not fortunate enough to leave... The group which suffers most will continue to be the one who pays the heaviest price.
