Today we have launched our canine countdown to Christmas with a digital advent calendar featuring some of the force’s super-cute puppies. The German shepherd youngsters − born six weeks ago into the force’s acclaimed breed scheme − star in a Twelve Pups of Christmas campaign that runs from 13 December to Christmas Eve. A fun-filled photo shoot at the dog unit’s Balsall Common base saw the canine cadets romping in wrapping paper, clambering over tinsel-clad police helmets, and playing tug-o-war with crackers. Images of their festive frolicking will be unveiled through an online advent calendar on West Midlands Police’s new Pintrest account − pinterest/wmpolice. But there’s a serious crime prevention message behind each of the photos and a reminder that “good will to all is the last thing on the minds of criminals at Christmas. Unfortunately crime doesn’t stop for Christmas and there will be some opportunist thieves looking to swipe purses and bags from unsuspecting shoppers or take advantage of sloppy home security. There’s nothing like a cute police puppy to grab people’s attention…we’re hoping the campaign will act as a fun way to spread some important messages that will help people protect themselves. Criminals don’t have a break at Christmas and neither do our police officers who will be working 24-7 over the festive period to keep people safe. The door to the first Twelve Pups of Christmas calendar will be peeled back tomorrow and encourages people to submit their own crime prevention tip on Twitter @WMPolice using the hashtag #santaclaws − plus a picture of a pet in festive dress! Whoever sends in the best photo and security tip will win a chance to meet the puppy stars of the campaign and some of the new arrivals at the dog unit kennels. Subsequent advent pups will front advice on keeping burglars at bay, staying safe whilst out on Christmas parties, and keeping presents out of thieves’ clutches.
