Record year for island students - CHANNEL ISLANDS The latest GCSE results show 75.3% of students in the Bailiwick of Guernsey gained five A* - C grades compared to Jersey where 72.6% of pupils have being awarded A* to C grades. C grades are the most common in Jersey with 27.7% gaining the award compared to 10.2% getting an A*, 16.9% gained and A grade and 24.3% gained a B. Education Minister Deputy Patrick Ryan said: Today’s results show Jersey students and schools are performing well. When compared to last year, our school results have improved which is great news. Congratulations go to all the students and teachers who have worked so hard to achieve these results. The results for Guernseys States schools are in; For the whole of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, 75.3% of students gained five A* - C grades. Looking at individual school GCSE results, the Grammar School has performed the best with 97.1% of pupils gaining five A* - C grades, that figure is slightly more than last years 96.9%. St Annes School in Alderney have had an improvement on last year with 58.3% achieving five A* - C grades compared to 57.1% last year. La Mare de Carteret High School has substantially improved on its figures for last year with 54.2% of pupils gaining five A* - C grades, that is compared to 35.5% in 2013. At St Sampsons, 65% gained five A* - C grades compared to 48.3% of students last year. Education Minister, Robert Sillars said: On behalf of the Education Board I would like to congratulate all our young people who have worked so hard to achieve these results today. We do not appear to have experienced the volatility of results predicted in England and I think our teachers need to be congratulated for ensuring that their students were well prepared despite significant changes to the exam system. Jersey College for Girls have released its figures. More than 25% of all students gained A* or A grades in all their exams. 60% of pupils got A* and A grades overall. The College claims its A* - C pass rate is the best it has ever achieved. Principal, Carl Howarth said: We are delighted for our students, teachers and parents and congratulate them all upon the outstanding achievement at GCSE. Given the significant changes to the examination format, we are especially pleased that our students continue to increase the percentage of A* and A grades on previous years. In Guernsey, Elizabeth College has given out its results; 24% of pupils gained A* grades with 48.4% achieving an A* - A. 94% of students were awarded five or more A* - C grades. Principal, George Hartley, said: “It is always great to see the boys receive recognition for their hard work on results day and yet again many have exceeded expectations, especially at the top end where individual sets of results represent our best ever. Beaulieu School in Jersey are reporting a 100% pass rate. Headmaster, Chris Beirne, said: As a academically non-selective school, we strive to help every child in our care reach their full potential, wherever their area of interest may lie. We are thrilled for the students who have excelled this year and we are extremely proud of their achievements. All the girls are to be congratulated on their results following a great deal of hard work and we are delighted to celebrate their success with them today.
