Recruiting Question of the Week Q: Where should a freshman/sophomore be in the recruiting process? A: It will vary for every student-athlete. You will not be hearing (legally, at least) from any NCAA DI or DII coaches until June your sophomore season, and that date varies depending on your state. Even coaches can not recruit you yet, they are putting together lists of top freshmen and sophomores in the area and doing their research on your recruiting class nation-wide. However, if a coach in a logoed polo isn’t sitting in the stands, that doesn’t mean no one is watching you in the area. As freshmen and sophomores (even juniors and seniors for that matter ), you need to focus more on fundamentals, academics and leadership than your state/national rankings. The better you are fundamentally with position-specific skills, the better you will do in the recruiting process. With that being said, camps and combines can help you get ahead in the process—help you compare yourself with other players in your county, state, region and nation-wide. If possible, attend camps and combines as a freshman/sophomore so you can understand how they will work, what drills you need to work on, etc. By familiarizing yourself with the process early it will go smoother for you as an upperclassmen.
