Red Collie posts us draws our attention to this historical document with his covering text - Here is a copy of the famous letter which Jim Watson in Cambridge sent to his friend Max Delbruck at Caltech in 1952, which showed for the first time the DNA A-T and G-C base pairs. I still feel moved seeing that letter today. Watson asked Delbruck not to show it to Linus Pauling, who had 200 IQ and was a competitor on the subject. Delbruck never liked secrecy, so he asked Linus to come to his office and said, There is a letter on my desk. I cant show it to you! Pauling was convinced right away, especially since his son (a friend of Watson in Cambridge) had helped Watson make the discovery. Being a man of honour, he gave credit for the discovery to Watson without any question. Watsons advisor in Cambridge, Max Perutz, likewise gave credit to Watson and did not add his name to the paper. I met all of Delbruck, Watson and Perutz in the 1980s at Caltech or Cambridge. Perutz would take everyone for Sunday walks at Wandlebury Ring (near the 2002 Gog Magog crop pictures). They were very great men, and that is how science should be done.: https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10202920849891535&set=o.246667595346687&type=1&theater
