Red Team passes first test Nate Rogers of South Sioux City caught two touchdowns passes to help lead the Red Team past the White Team 20-10 Saturday night in the first-ever Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Classic. Saturday night’s game, played at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Norfolk, drew 2,249 spectators. Faith Regional Health Services was the Title Sponsor for the inaugural event. Rogers was on the receiving end of a 68-yard touchdown strike from high school teammate Scott Manley in the second quarter. He then caught a 12-yard scoring pass from Norfolk Catholic’s Jordan Bellar. In all, Rogers caught five passes for 97 yard. He was named Most Valuable Offensive Player of the game for the Red Team. On the defensive end, Riley Knake helped lead the Red Team with nine tackles, including one for a loss. He was named the Red Team’s Most Valuable Defensive Player of the game. For the White Team, Travis Wright of Battle Creek rushed for 127 yards on 30 carries. He scored the White Team’s lone touchdown from three yards out. He was named the White Team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player of the game. Defensively, Cody Merchant of Norfolk High School was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the game. Nate Meier of Pierce and Jake Werner of Humphrey St. Francis received “Best Teammate’’ Awards for the Red and White teams, respectively. The Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Classic Board of Directors also presented White Head Coach Bob Schnitzler and Red Head Coach Rich Rethwisch of Wayne special coaches’ plaques.
