Redeemer Christian Reformed Church will be hosting a four-part series, incorporating documentary and discussion on Living the 8th Fire. “In the time of the seventh fire [prophecy], the white race will be given a choice between two paths: one will lead to destruction, the other to the lighting of the Eighth and final fire, an Eternal Fire of Peace, Love, and Brotherhood.” -Traditional Anishnabe prophecy Despite formal apologies, we still have issues that divide us from the indigenous peoples in our country and our neighbourhood. Do we owe them anything? If so, what? Please join your neighbours in working toward new understanding and relationships among all who now occupy this land of Canada. The series will take place at 7:30 at Redeemer Christian Reformed Church, 5834 Blackwell Side Road, just north of London Line in Sarnia. Thurs. Oct. 6 7:30 This week, Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m., is the first session in the series Living the 8th Fire. We will be invited to reflect on our place in Canada, as well as the way we think about our indigenous neighbours. We will view the first segment of Wab Kinew’s 8th Fire Documentary: INDIGENOUS IN THE CITY. This episode introduces us to a variety of Indigenous Peoples living very distinct lives, and we will hear how these people are struggling to come to terms with their identities. Thurs. Oct. 13 7:30 Living the 8th Fire We may tire of hearing about Aboriginal issues in our country and we may think, “Can’t they just get over it? My life wasn’t easy either, but it’s time to move on!” Come this Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. to the second session of Living the 8th Fire. IT’S TIME challenges us with the understanding that the broken relationships of the past still have repercussions today. Thurs. Oct. 20 7:30 Why is land so important to Canada’s indigenous peoples? What were the dreams of our own families or ancestors in coming to Canada? The goal of the third session of Living the 8th Fire, WHOSE LAND IS IT ANYWAY, is to help us feel better equipped to discuss and interact with today’s realities. Tues Oct. 27, 2013 7:30 God reconciles us to himself, and he calls us to reconcile with others. But what does that require? The final session of Living the 8th Fire, AT THE CROSSROADS, will consider the Prime Minister’s apology as a beginning point of growing toward mutual responsibility. blackburnnews/sarnia/sarnia-news/2013/10/02/building-relationships/
