Over the last 20+ years, the City of Ashland has been aggressively undertaking a multifaceted approach to reducing the risk of wildfire to their community and the associated lands within the wildland urban interface, including the Ashland watershed that provides drinking water for the City. Chris has spearheaded that effort and will describe the various methods the City has undertaken to help achieve those long term objectives. These include: · Prioritization, obtaining funding and implementing fuels management on over 500 privately owned properties within the Ashland wildland-urban interface · Forest and resource management from a fire management perspective on 1000+ acres of City-owned forestlands in and around the Ashland watershed, including everything from helicopter thinning to prescribed underburning · Active participation in development of Firewise Communities and the newer Fire Adapted Communities program. · Participation in the Ashland Forest Resiliency Project on US Forest Service owned lands in the Ashland watershed · Encouraging social buy-in through active community engagement in a variety of levels and programs · Developing multiple funding streams to help finance this important work. The program is free, designed to be casual and informative, with lots of room for questions and thought-provoking discussion. All interested parties are encouraged to attend!
