Referenda Vs Elections Have been listening to a lot of discussion from both camps on the upcoming Scottish Independence Vote, read a lot of whats being said on Social Media as well as in the General Media (on all wings) and will continue to do so right up until 18th September 2014 when I make my final decision on how to vote. All I have to say at the moment though is the following: On the assumption that the question Should Scotland be an independent country? is answered YES by the majority of Scottish people on 18th September 2014, the date pencilled in for Scotlands Independence Day is 24th March 2016. This is less than two months before the next planned Scottish Parliament elections in May 2016 where the people of an Independent Scotland have the chance to democratically vote into power any Political Party they choose. Regardless of which Party this is they WILL have the power and control over, not only the economic and fiscal levers of an Independent Scotland, but of every lever and aspect of how the country is run on the behalf of the Scottish people. The decisions made by our democratically-elected leaders in years to come over future generations will ONLY be possible with a YES vote this year! We cant make the second BIG decision of whos going to have power in an Independent Scotland if we do not make first BIG decision of granting them that power. Dont be under the misconception that a vote for Independence is a vote for SNP, hearing a lot of this and We (the Scottish people, YOU) need to learn to differentiate between the two when doing our research into this BIG decision we have ahead of Us. On the flip-side, assuming that the question Should Scotland be an independent country? is answered NO by the majority of Scottish people on 18th September 2014, the future of voting in Scotland may not even exist as the net contribution of Scotland towards a majority vote is never enough to influence who gets into power in Westminster. We (the Scottish people, YOU) would have little influence over who had power or control over, not only the economic and fiscal levers, but of every lever and aspect of the framework we exist within except those powers (currently) devolved to Holyrood from Westminster. Political Parties are already on the prowl for votes in the next Westminster General Election with a promise to devolve more powers to Holyrood if they are voted into Westminster. In short, 18th September 2014 is the date for the Scottish Independence REFERENDUM; it is NOT an election for any Political Party!
