Referendum post 1/1. Im a unionist - always have been. Im quite comfortable with my country being the UK rather than Scotland. I have no time for Nationalism whether its ethnic/civic or Scottish/British and do not feel unrepresented because votes in the place I live dont always sway the election. For those reasons I am against independence. I also like to think Im a realist. The risks and costs of independence are real (currency, EU membership issues etc.). For me those risks weigh more heavily than the appeal of more localised power. So again, I decided against independence. BUT I am also a socialist, internationalist and above all an optimist. Nothing gives me more optimism than the level of engagement and debate i have seen in Scotland these past two years. It has convinced me that we WILL work together to create the country we believe in, and with a proportionally elected parliament everyones voice would have the power it deserves. That chance DOES outweigh the risks, which are short-term and will be overcome by a country with our wealth of resources and people. The prospect of creating that fairer society is more important than the borders that surround it; so Im happy to draw a border along the South of Scotland if that happens to be where it has to be, and to embrace the challenges of creating a new state. So after 2 years (and the rest of my life really) of firm opposition, I am voting YES for optimism, opportunity and the biggest democratic movement Im ever likely to be part of. This is a unique chance to get involved. Lets do that.
