Reflecting 2000 The Spirits Cry If thy could put thy country first Thy countries spirit would not thirst If thy could put thy country first Thy countries spirit would not hurt If thy could put thy country first Thy countries spirit would be heard If thy could put thy country first Thy countries spirit would be immersed If thy could put thy country first Thy countries spirit would be first If thy could put thy country first Thy countries spirit would be shared Amanda Lee Johnson Captains Flat, NSW, Australia 11 January 2014 National pride and unity are a great thing and as my poem The Spirits Cry expresses ideas that encourage us to consider our countries needs first before addressing personal interests. Placing your own country first does also lead to international interests being achieved. This then brings achievements that are not only personal but of great benefit to our country, our alliance countries and international friends. These benefits are far greater than if you addressed your personal interests first. From my experiencing of reflecting 2000 I have been able to gain insight into what some of our country needs are. Our education system must provide as a core subject legal studies and an understanding of the work of the United Nations. I also believe that some structural changes are needed, such as ensuring that our system of check and balance extends to as many people as possible. These types of changes would assist in achieving true equality before the law, such as a right to access dispute resolution services and better access to the criminal law system. This would assist greatly in not only strengthening our communities but also assist in providing a stable government and a civil community. Any changes must be paced and well considered. It is necessary that those changes can demonstrate that they are supported and successful in achieving democratic goals and are workable structures that will stand the test of time. The Commonwealth and State Constitutions and the Magna Carta are the foundations of our law. We must be very mindful of the lessons of history and carefully consider those lessons in any changes. The Monarchy will always have a role to play in championing community interests for the good. The Magna Carta has its 800 year Anniversary in 2015 and remains as our societies foundation and always will be. Amanda Lee Johnson 19 January 2014. International Copyright, 2014.
