Reflecting: Once I convinced everyone I was not an athlete, I joined the band in high school. During Marching/football season i played the Bass Drum. We had finally purchased new band uniforms that came with these fancy fake fur hats and plumes. The uniforms were blue with white overlays. The rule was no hair touching the overlays. Since most of us had long hair at the time we resorted to any means possible to put our hair up under the hats. I tried the pony tails but they gave me a head ache. I noticed the Black band members were using pantyhose so i tried that and it worked! One night we were at an away game when it started pouring down rain. The dye from the hats started running down our faces so our director hurried us back to the bus and told us we would not be marching during half time. So we all took off our hats, put up our instruments and watched it rain. About five minutes before half time the Director decided we would march. It was chaos! People getting uniforms back on, strapping on instruments and getting those hats on. Half the band was already on the field getting ready to perform by the time i got dressed and harnessed up that cumbersome bass drum. I finally made it out to the field and marched. After the show my Mom came up to me asking me what was going on with my hair. Apparently the legs from the hose didnt make it up into the hat and were hanging down my back. I had also harnessed the drum upside down so our mascot painted on the drum, a greyhound was lying on its back instead of a running position. I hated band.... .
