Reflecting back on why I ran for council made me chuckle. Talk about getting the wind knocked out of you in a split second. We all go in wanting to change the world and to leave our mark on the City and its people. We have grand plans and high hopes and we know that our vision is the vision of the masses. Well no, doesnt really happen that way. You join a table of people, some who are veterans and some one term in, and guess what, they have a vision too and its not yours, well not completely. You find out things at the the table that you never would have thought possible, truly. What do you mean we cant do that? Or this? Well what about? No, really? Municipal governance is funny and slow and mind boggling and somewhat frustrating. I have learned a lot from my 12 years on Council. It really has been the most enjoyable thing I have ever done. Just remember that you cant change the world in a meeting and you cant impose your views on others and in the end you are part of a team. Respect, candor and humor and a great deal of listening will get you through the rough spots, there will be many. I look forward to serving you for another 4 years. I look forward to working with the team. If I can change the world a little over my tenure, then I will be the happiest girl out there.
