Reflections WHO ARE YOU? I often wonder why so many of us look to others for validation of our self-worth. Do you know who you are? Are we so insecure about our own abilities, or lack the confidence in our work ethic or the product we produce, that we desperately seek that nod of approval from the boss, our co-workers, our spouse, our children, our neighbors or our friends? Don’t you know when you’ve completed an assignment correctly and on time? Don’t you know when you’ve busted you ass and done a good job? “I did the best I could,” should be your only concern. While you may need a critique of your work, and you may be praised during this evaluation, only you will know what effort you put in. All I ever look for is a “thank you” for giving my all. And to each I say, you’re welcome. YOU must make an effort to know yourself. We look in the mirror and we obsess with weight, height, hair color, skin color, eye color, type of job, educational level, what clothes you wear, and especially, how much money you have. Take out any of these listed parameters listed above, and you are still a human being, and if you are very fortunate, an American. Each of us is unique, yet our similarities are so much greater than our differences. While we may all have distinctive fingerprints, all humans share eight blood types. What makes us very special is our innate will; our ability to make our own decisions. And yet we still seek others to tell us we look good, did well, had a great vacation or took a nap. One of the downfalls in our lives is the instantaneous, yet anonymous media validation by those who don’t share in our experiences, but provide endorsement of them from afar. I am now able to tell you what I did and how I did it almost as soon as it was done. I love social media, yet I crave interpersonal interactions. No one has seen, or will ever see, life through your eyes, therefore no one really knows what you are going through in life. I know I have had similar experiences that my parents, my children, and even my grandchildren have had, but they cannot know what my thoughts were then nor can I predict how they will react during their time of action. Those who work in the same or a similar occupation, will have shared many of the types of events which you will encounter, and will offer much advice. Listen to them, but closely evaluate…seek out the words which come from the heart. A wise sage will give you much which is needed, and when you learn to discern the difference between mere braggadocios espousing, from honest appraisals, you will be able to accept advice with appreciation. But, in truth, you must learn to read your moods and evaluate yourself. You would not let a sinner lead you toward salvation, just as you would not allow a pauper to teach you how to become a millionaire. Each, if they believed and followed their own advice, would be a saved person or a millionaire. Their words of advice are obviously false and not from a place of reliability. Judge each of them by their actions and not just their words. I am often sought out for advice or counsel, and I will only offer my words when then come from my own experiences. But know this, my advice will always come from the heart, will have no intent to cause you harm and be spoken within the principles of my faith. I know who I am.
