Regarding Toni Morrison deciding to leave her papers at Princeton instead of Howard, this comment from Byron on the BreakingBrown fan page deserves airing out: Has anyone considered that many HBCUs dont value the papers and works of artists and scholars? I have several distinguished colleagues who have donated their papers to HBCUs and when they returned to the respective libraries the papers were still in the basements with visible mold infestation. Many HBCU presidents dont appreciate the papers either. It took Texas Southern University way too many years to get Barbara Jordan papers digitized. Her papers lay in the basement for many years before finally being archived. Fisk University is selling off valuable paintings donated to them to keep the university afloat. Toni Morrison taught at Texas Southern University and they ran her off. Howard has not been well managed the last couple of years and it is possible that Ms. Morrison was concerned about the financial viability of Howard as well as her having some familiarity with HBCUs that she decided that Princeton was the best place for her papers.
