The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated World Environment Day in its auditorium at Channi Himmat, Jammu. A seminar on the theme topic “Small Islands and Climate Change” with the slogan “Raise you voice not the Sea level” was organized in which large number of engineers, Environment lovers, academicians and members of the civil society participated. On this occasion Dr. C. M. Seth, Chairperson, WWF-India, J&K State was the Chief Guest and Dr. Raj Kumar Rampal, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu was the Guest of Honour. Er. B. B. Sharma, FIE; Immediate Past Chairman of Jammu Local Centre presided over the function. At the outset, Er. Anil Verma, MIE; Former Honorary Secretary of Jammu Local Centre read the message of Sh. Vinod Ranjan, IFS; Chairman, J&K State Pollution Control Board on World Environment Day, who could not attend the function due to his preoccupation in New Delhi. He appreciated the efforts of Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre in creating awareness in the society regarding Environmental conservation by organizing such seminars every year in the past also. Er. H. C. Jerath, FIE; Er. B. L. Rawal, MIE; Er Pooja Sharma, AMIE; Er. Supinder Jeet Singh,AMIE & Er. Rajesh Kumar Angural presented papers on the Theme Topic. The speakers lamented the degraded scenario of climate in the present times and suggested some measures to be adopted by all the stake holders so that Environmental degradation can be checked. These included afforestation of barren lands, strict enforcement of laws for deforestation so that proper silviculture is adhered to, pressure on the industrialized nations to reduce the green house gas emissions and adoption of renewable energy options like Solar/Wind Energy. One of the speakers suggested some measures which can be adopted by us daily which will help in reducing the energy loss and save the environment from the ingress of harmful emissions. They also stressed for scientific Water Shed management so that vegetative and green cover on our planet is increased thereby reducing the ill effect of climate change. Dr. C. M. Seth, Chief Guest appreciated the efforts of The Institution of Engineers (India) for taking keen interest in the environmental issues despite being an engineering body. He expressed his displeasure about non implementation of “Environmental Sustainability” which is one of the Millennium Development Goals because of casual attitude of all the stake holders. He proposed construction of check dams on the rivers and rivulets to recharge them in dry seasons to make them environmentally sustainable. He also advocated for giving free hand to the field functionaries of all the departments so that they become sensitive to the issues and prepare realistic reports after going in the field instead of preparing the false reports due to pressure of their superiors. This will go a long way in improving the climate of the region and taking proper action by the stake holders based on factual reports. Er.
