Regarding the Noah film and the reactions Im seeing from my fellow Christians on Facebook... First of all let me say that Im seeing multiple points of view on here and Im going to take a position on this that is unpopular to many of my friends and family. Please understand that even though I disagree with you, I respect your perspective and understand why youre upset. Thats actually kind of the heart of my point: we have to start disagreeing with others in a loving and respectful way. The reputation of Christs church depends on it. Now more than ever, Christians are seen as hateful and judgmental. If there truly is an agenda to discredit American Christians, why are we validating these accusations by lashing out with battle cries every time we feel attacked by A&E or Comedy Central or Darren Aronofsky? What happened to turning the other cheek? That was just my preface. Darren Aronofsky has always made extremely unusual films. I havent seen Noah, but Im sure its as bizarre and visually striking as all of his other films. You should have no expectations of an evangelical biblical film. I plan on seeing it. Im not sure when but its on my list. Ill go into it expecting it to be weird and unusual and to have beautiful cinematography and lots of stuff in the movie thats not in the book. Thats par for the course for just about every movie I see. I will critique and judge it for what it is: a piece of art, not an interpretation of scripture. As Christians, we must understand the perspectives of those with which we share the world. The story of Noah is absolute truth to us, but its not to the rest of the world. When we pitch a fit because a non-Christian tells the story as a myth, we slam the door in the worlds face. Im not saying you shouldnt judge the film until youve seen it. You dont have to go see it. Im saying you shouldnt turn this into a battleground. Because all the world hears is that youre upset that they dont believe the bible. If evangelism is the goal, how could this approach possibly get you to that point? I mean, what is the purpose in whipping up a firestorm about this? Are we following some hidden biblical command to attack the world? Did I miss the memo on that? I thought the command was to share the good news. I thought the command was to, when at all possible, live in peace with others. Perhaps Ive misunderstood. Maybe your purpose is just to let other Christians know that Noah is being made by a guy who believes the Bible to be a book of myths. May I suggest you simply update your status to say Hey, dont forget: Noah is an Aronofsky film and hes pretty weird so just be aware of that if you were thinking it was a prequel to The Passion of The Christ. Wise as serpents. Gentle as doves. And try to have a sense of humor. Theyll all know were Christians by our love. Remember, Jesus cracked the whip and overturned tables in the church. He dined with sinners. Before we start upending the worlds tables, lets ask ourselves how many sinners weve dined with lately and if there are any money changers in our churches. If Ive upset you with my opinion, I hope we can still be friends. If you agree with my opinion, Im sorry I dont have a fancy blog to pen my deepest musings. My account is public though, if youd like to share this status with your friends. Or feel free to copy and paste this. I dont have interest in self-promotion. I just care about my fellow Christian friends. Youre not as bad as my other friends say you are but its hard to defend when we act this way. I believe we should do whatever we can to encourage each other to demonstrate the same kind of love that has been demonstrated to us. Peace and love to all of you.
