Regarding the Plight of Joshua French in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Below is a reply from the Consular Country Casework Team: Thank you for your email of 20 February, about the case of Joshua French, a joint Norwegian-British national currently facing the death penalty in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The case of Joshua French is of great concern to the British Government. Mr French’s case has been raised at the most senior levels of the Congolese government and we will continue to raise our concerns. The British Government has a principled opposition to the death penalty anywhere in the world and welcomes the continued moratorium on executions in the DRC. We will continue to make all appropriate representations to the DRC authorities to set out our opposition to the death penalty in general and its application to Mr French in this case. I am unable to give you detailed information on this case, however let me assure you that we take our commitments to the welfare of British nationals detained overseas very seriously. UK consular staff are providing Mr French with assistance to support him at this difficult time. We are working closely with Mr French’s legal team, his family and UK NGOs. We are also working in close partnership with the Norwegian authorities on this case. We will continue to seek the support of the DRC authorities in order to maintain consular assistance. Regards Consular Country Casework Team
