Regional rivals Mauritius and the Seychelles play for pride in their last game in Group A at the Cosafa Cup in Zambia on Wednesday having both been eliminated from the regional championship. Defeat for both island nations at the hands of Namibia in their opening games means they can no longer win the three team group … but there are still bragging rights at stake. Mauritius went down 2-1 to Namibia on Saturday while the Seychelles led twice but lost 2-4 in the end to the Namibians on Monday. Wednesday’s match in Lusaka revives a long-standing rivalry in which Seychelles, despite their inferior ranking, have dominated of late. Statistically honours are even between the two nations. In 19 past meetings, there have been seven wins apiece with five draws. But in the last four meetings between the two countries, Seychelles are unbeaten, including famous 7-0 drubbing of Mauritius in their last Cosafa Cup meeting. That embarrassing defeat in Witbank in 2008 still rankles with Club M, as Mauritius are nicknamed, and will serve as a motivational spur for the match up at the Nkoloma Stadium in the Zambian capital.
