‘Regional special courts needed’ A party-list lawmaker wants regional special courts created for human trafficking cases. Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe made the proposal amid the 2013 United States’ Global Trafficking in Persons Report of the State Department retaining its Tier 2 anti-trafficking rating of the country because of a weak justice system. “I think we have to create special courts in regional centers to exclusively try human trafficking cases,” he saidd. Batocabe urged agencies to make public its accomplishments to be scrutinized by Congress, especially over eports that the problem on human trafficking has remained unabated because of alleged collusion of law enforcement agencies. “Moreover, the present task force against human trafficking should be more transparent and accountable by requiring it to publish its accomplishments on a quarterly basis aside from being subjected to the oversight powers of Congress,” he said. Gabriela party-list Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan sought the “cleansing of government agencies concerned of scalawags and corrupt personnel and strengthening of the country’s justice system” in support to Batocabe’s measure. manilastandardtoday/2013/07/02/regional-special-courts-needed/
