Reigate - Summer Holiday - 1956 - The perfect Day. I’m 6 yrs Old. Big brother, 10. Mum gives us half a crown each, and tells us to be home before dark. Up to swimming baths, (no cost as got season ticket). Lots of fun bombing each other. No silly rules. Visit local bread shop for a large crispy fresh-baked roll, buttered, cost 3d. over to the Castle Grounds to meet brother’s pals and play cowboys and indians. (I’m the youngest and just about tolerated). Lunch at Fish & Chip Shop/Cafe (just past Railway Station). Fish & chips/mushy peas/slice/lemonade cost, 1/9d. Into Priory, via Woolworths. messed around by, or on the Lake. Chased by the Park Keeper, (don’t know why. It was just as it was. His function was to chase us. Ours was to run). Over to Sweet Shop/ Cafe in Bell St, opposite Priory. Glass of King Fling, with a Canadian ice-cream block put in. Lovely And Frothy. Cost 6d. Back into Priory to find a game of football or cricket to join in, (always seemed to be welcomed, even by kids we didn’t know). Tired and worn out, back home for tea. If we’re lucky, our favourite, beans with sliced Pork Breakfast Sausage & Liver Sausage, from Sainsburys. Play games and wait for Dad to come home from work. Play with Dad, listen to radio. Up to Bed. No TV, no computer games, no mobile phones, no theme parks, no Mcdonalds, no designer trainers, not much money, but total blissful freedom and fun, in a wonderful town, Reigate.
