Reign In Blood may be the album everybody fawns over as the defining Slayer album, but, South Of Heaven is where this iconic L.A. Death Thrash Metal act perfected their formula. South Of Heaven most definitely found Slayer locked in a power groove buttressed by molten Rick Rubin recording values. Indeed, for those who like their Slayer heavy, serious, crushing and not in the least bit punky or compact, this vidoe and opening track says it all, as does the wider album around it. And as does its follow up, Seasons In The Abyss, the other album often spoken about in hushed tones as one of the pair anchoring the Slayer catalog in a murky sea of doom. RIP Jeff Hanneman
