Reilly is a 167# Mastiff who is prone to ear infections. Last year, and again today, he got a hematoma in his left ear pinna. What is an ear hematoma? A dog’s ear flap is comprised of 2 flaps of cartilage. When the dog shakes its head violently back and forth, sometimes a blood vessel will break, and blood will leak in between the 2 cartilage flaps. This creates pressure and is very painful for the dog! There are many ways to try to repair an ear hematoma. Unfortunately, none are perfect and this can be a very frustrating problem to treat. Today we decided to drain the blood and wrap his ear tightly around a soft roll of gauze. The gauze will absorb any further blood, and the pressure from the wrap will discourage his body from leaking more blood. While the bandage is on, we will give him an anti-inflammatory medication to help decrease pain and to promote scar tissue formation. The e-collar will keep him from scratching off the bandage with his foot. Will it work? We certainly hope so. If not, he will have to have surgery. We’ll keep you posted!
