Relative deprivation: If youre just in the existence of low economic status, absolute deprivation aside, the stress of that, the way you think about yourself, has incredibly inhibiting effects on the way your body and your mind works. And you will develop high stress levels, cardiac problems, heart disease problems very predictably in certain cases. Structural violence: Its like someone polluting a water supply and 15 years later it goes to the town and people get cancer. They dont know why theyve gotten the cancer; they dont know the causality. But is that an act of violence if you did that? Of course it is. This is structural violence. And in the broad scheme, which has been [revealed] through public health research, [it] has killed more people than every dictator combined, killed more people than every war combined in the past 200 years since these studies became evident. Economic bigotry: Gandhi knew this immediately; he said poverty is the worst form of violence. Was a great intuition. MLK talked about this all the time before his death: all he wanted to see was equal income. He said lets stabilize, this is economic bigotry basically. Economic bigotry built right into this system because of capitalisms inherent propensity to create inequality. Which people love it if you believe in social Darwinism, because everyone walks around reinforced to think theyre better than everyone else because of all their property and status. It is one of the most caustic things you can possibly to do a society, is to generate inequality when it comes to public health.
