Released today(ish) in 1977: The Ramones perfect third album, Rocket To Russia, the highpoint of their career and a stand-out in a year crammed with some of the greatest records ever made. The exact sweet spot between their stripped-down punk rawness and Joeys insatiable love of 60s bubblegum pop, Rocket To Russia made me a lifelong Ramones fan. An album so crammed with great songs it feels like a greatest-hits record: live staples like Sheena Is A Punk Rocker, Teenage Lobotomy, and Were A Happy Family; a couple of brilliant covers with Do You Wanna Dance? and Surfin Bird - all killer, no filler. The fact that this wasnt the best-selling album of 1977 is incontestable proof that people are goddamned morons. Pick-to-click: My fave Ramones song of all-time, and maybe just my favourite SONG of all-time, full stop: The Dee-Dee penned ode to Beach Boys-style surf, Rockaway Beach. It is impossible to be in a bad mood while listening to Rockaway Beach. ONE TWO THREE FOUR!
