Remember Mitt Romney? This morning (on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”) he came out in support of an increase in the minimum wage. I part company with many of the conservatives in my party on the issue of the minimum wage. I think we ought to raise it, he said. Our party is all about more jobs and better pay, Romney said, adding that income inequality has worsened under Democratic control. (Not incidentally, two of Romney’s competitors for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum, have also come out recently for an increase in the minimum wage.) Apparently you can support a minimum-wage increase, and even express concern about widening inequality, if you’re not planning to run for president. Romney was against a minimum-wage increase in 2012. He also said this morning he won’t run in 2016. Two of his competitors for the GOP nomination in 2012, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum, have also come out in favor of an increase in the minimum wage, and neither has shown any interest in running. Could it be that it’s easier for a Republican to be sane if he’s not running for president?
