Remember Sayba? The doggy Momma Danas friend, Olivia, recently - TopicsExpress

Remember Sayba? The doggy Momma Danas friend, Olivia, recently adopted? Heres an update! From Olivia, her new mommy :) She got her surgery on Friday, November 7th. She had a torn meniscus and a torn ACL. There were two different ACL surgeries we could choose from: the typical (and the one Tims (Olivia’s boyfriend) Rottweiler had 7 1/2 years ago) was a TPLO which is when the tibia is broken so that when it heals it is sturdier to prevent damage in the future. The other, and the one we went with, is a newer procedure called a MRIT in which nothing is broken, but two 100-lb-supporting ropes are infused to allow repair of the muscle and support of the dog. Saybas surgery in total was $3700, and with the help of the animal shelter we adopted her from and the AMAZING help of all those that donated, we were able to pay off $2630 upfront. All that is left is $1070 on the surgery, but because Sayba is a large dog and is going to be putting a lot of pressure on her good leg, theres always a high chance of her tearing the other one if she doesnt get involved with therapy such as hydrotherapy. Breaking down each payment *estimate*, the entire payment left for Saybas misfortunes with the included therapy is looking at about $1300. Not bad, considering, but a lot for a full-time student/part-time dog walker and her full-time kennel manager of a boyfriend. Shes a bit of a picky eater, so we have to get her special food but thats not too much of a problem. She definitely loves us; her first few nights with us she was quiet and shy, and now as soon as we leave her just to go into the kitchen shes whining for us to come back. Her tail is really long and thumps everything when she wags it, and every time she sees either me, Tim or Jenga (who were keeping separated until shes better so they don’t play and do damage) it goes CRAZY. She really loves Jenga. She licks her, nudges her and submits belly up every time we allow Jenga to come near her. She gets a knuckle bone to keep her teeth strong and healthy every week, and we have her on daily walks to go outside. Shes already trying to jump on beds and counters, but we freak out any time she does and get her to calm down because we dont want her putting THAT much pressure on her leg just yet. Also, another benefit of the MRIT over the TPLO is that the TPLO is an 8-13 week recovery due to breaking of the tibia, whereas the MRIT is a 3-4 week recovery
