Remember Tiananmen Square. Remember why everything from rhino to pangolin are being poached in Africa in astonishing numbers, as well as why so much of the continent is being dug up with Chinese equipment and crews. These things are not unrelated, unfortunately. The Chinese Communist Party opted to gun down democracy demonstrators. They then decided the best way to guarantee the CCPs power was to deter any future demonstrations through the pursuit of economic growth. Neither the Tiananmen acts nor most of the others mentioned in this post involved, or involve, moral or ethical restraint. I say this having seen firsthand the actions of Chinese-government-connected individuals in the Ituri Forest of Congo, the Serengeti in Tanzania, the Mavuradonha Wilderness of Zimbabwe (so special, it is where I proposed to my wife... but presently The Mavs is being bulldozed by a Chinese company looking to extract platinum).
