Remember When: These were the Halloween costumes we grew up with in the 80s. Granted, all the masks were genuinely creepy, even when they did not intend to be. You cut your tongue on the small opening near the mouth to the point where the tip of your tongue hurt the next morning. Your hair would inevitably get caught on the rubber band that was used to secure the mask around your head. You would perspire around the eye area, where the mask was most tight. There was no protection for your ears, so on a particularly cool night, they would hurt like the dickens when you finally returned home. The bottom of the mask would rub against your throat, causing a razor burn like effect. The plastic top and pants or skirt that accompanied your mask was too flimsy in cold weather to keep you warm, but too stuffy if it was slightly warm outside, like it can be in the south on Halloween night. You wore your most comfortable pair of well-worn sneakers (not a new and fancy, costume-specific pair of shoes), because you were going to be walking for a few hours. They were not the best costumes, like the ones the kids have now, but they were our costumes. A whole costume fit in a box, and your parents did not have to take out a small loan to afford one.
