Remember the Liberal Democrats 2010 manifesto? You know, the one they never kept... Even though the Lib Dems arent in the habit of keeping their promises - I should know, given the tuition I pay - it might be appropriate for Vince Cable to read what he wrote 4 years ago... Ignoring the fact that Israel is the only country singled out for criticism in the Foreign Policy section, there is an interesting pledge on the sale of arms; We will ensure that British arms are not sold to states that would use them for internal repression. As far as I know, Israel is consistently ranked the freest country in the Middle East by independent humanitarian organisations such as Freedom House. There is no internal repression in Israeli democracy. However, British arms (worth billions) are sold to Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Nigeria, Oman (£100 billion is sent there) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. So Mr Cable, Mr Clegg and others, I know youre not in the habit of keeping your promises - but if you want to be even slightly consistent, dont target that one country whose military is regulated by international conventions and treaties. Start with those authoritarian regimes and their internal repression.
