Remember when playgrounds were fun? Sure, there was a pretty good chance you’d be scalded by a hot metal slide, or walk away with tetanus, but that’s what memories are made of. The ground wasn’t coated with soft recycled rubber or sand as most are today – they were asphalt. Remember being hurled from a spinning merry-go-round, then skidding across the gravel at full speed? Good times. Big problem with this. Anyone see it? There are an increasing number of children. Allergic to natural rubber latex. Rubber mulch playgrounds (and recycled tire rubber running tracks) have been shown to cause serious allergic reactions in children as well as any other latex allergic folk nearby. The increase in childhood latex allergy is likely from the increased exposure to sources such as this. Once a child develops LA, they are pretty much doomed for life as the condition gets progressively worse with no cure or desensitization available anywhere. Schools need to stop doing this to our kids!
