This film seeks to put into perspective the horrific incidents of a time when families and communities were ripped asunder and brother was set against brother. An archaeologist and man of science, Saket Ram is the son of an orthodox Brahmin family. He is married to a Bengali woman and has close friends from various communities. During Direct Action Day riots in Calcutta, his wife is raped and murdered in the neighborhood that they called home and this leads to the disintegration of his life. Unable to reconcile with the tragedy that was perpetrated by those he had trusted and called brother, Saket Ram is pulled into a vortex of grief and torment. Seeking a rational explanation and a reason for the nightmare raging around him in the country, he is led by circumstance and association to fixate on Mahatma Gandhi. The stunning climax of his hunt for retribution on the Mahatma rounds out a script that has been acclaimed as a remarkably complex screenplay structure. One of the most compelling films to have been made on the period.
