Remembering on this day one of this nations greatest presidents and larger-than-life figures - Theodore Roosevelt (27 October 1858 - 6 January 1919). Teddy was a distinguished author, historian, conservationist and fervent champion of physical robustness as well as exemplary public servant. He overcame severe asthma and other serious childhood maladies, suffered the deaths of his beloved first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, and mother on the same day, and was dealt a grievous blow in the final months of his life with the tragic death of his youngest son Quentin on the battlefields of France during the last days of WW1. Nevertheless, he was well known for his colorful personality and sense of humor, who, when questioned concerning his competence as President, replied, Surely you cannot expect me to be an effective President and handle Alice at the same time (referring to his high-spirited and tempestuous daughter Alice). Teddys appearance on Mount Rushmore along with three other notable American Presidents (Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln) serves as public acknowledgment of his stature as does the nuclear powered aircraft carrier that bears his name. And, yes, how could I forget the lovable character Teddy as a member of the Presidents Race at every Washington Nationals home game. He was even allowed to win at least one of those races during the 2012 playoffs even if he hasnt always looked particularly presidential, as was the case when he was spotted without sox on one occasion.
