Remembrance of my friend Bill Smith. Bill was killed in action early in 1969 on Hill 937 in Vietnam. You arrived in country a couple months ahead of me. You never knew I was also in the 101st Airborne. You never recd my letter expressing my hopes we could hook up & maybe go on R&R together. It was returned to me on my first mail call with an official notice that you were KIA. I wept over your lost innocence. Over a decade latter I wept by your name on the wall in DC. They say a man dies 2 deaths. The first his physical departure from this world. The second when his name is spoken for the last time. Decades after the last of your band of brothers has left this world, by happenstance or coincidence someone will dwell upon your name on that Wall & wonder who you were. He was bright. He had a strong moral compass. He was a loyal friend. He never got the chance to realize his potential. He was loved & missed for decades after his death
