Repost from February 5: What’s in a name ‘Atty’? This is my first time to write a small packet of ideas once again - the subject of the matter is – what’s in a name ‘Atty.’? I am not yet a waiting barrister by now but my innerself compels me to register my passion to become one someday. It won’t be long until the results of the 2013 bar exams will be released as always, the examinees are going through a difficult stage of waiting for the release of the results. To put in the picture, there are two kinds of lawyers wanna be. The first is the lawyer for the few and the second is for the many. In the context of chaos, plunder and un-peace situation in our country now, the arena of legal counseling is necessary to be changed. Thus, the situation tells us the only question – ‘for whom and for what’? It cannot be denied that the proportion of lawyers for the elite and the poor is far but of so different. Currently, I am in my sophomore year in the school of thought which molds the life, liberty and property of the future clients. For me, it is normal to ask questions. It is normal to doubt in my capacities especially I have a bipolar condition. But my herstory transform my being to side with the trainings, legal education, and structured learning experience through legal tactics which cannot be learned in the traditional legal studies and profession. Even though there will be no rewards, lawyering for the poor, marginalized and oppressed will play a big part of my experience in reading endless cases and memorize traditional laws. Even though professors push us to our limits, lawyering for the many will always be my choice to engage in the transformation of our nation. Even though sometimes I ponder whether or not I continue to pursue this lawyering wanna be, I will always choose to serve my inspiration, my future clients – the peasants, urban poor, workers, indigenous people, women and children, fisher folks, human rights defenders and migrant workers.
