The Filmmakers thought it was okay to violate Child Labor Laws in Our Non-Union State of North Carolina. I disagreed. They were reported to the Screen Actors Guild also known as SAG in Orlando, Florida prior to my driving up Beech Mountain North Carolina where the Cast & Crew were housed in the Pinnacle Inn which was literally on the very top of the mountain which faces Sugar Mountain, North Carolina near Banner Elk and Grandfather Mountain, N.C. I met with Mickey Coleman, Dashiells mother who had called Southern Media Arts Agency in a distraught state of mind. Her mother Pat was an actress in my agency at the time and therefore knew of my agency. Upon meeting with the production manager at the production office for The Winter People, I told them they had two choices which was to either get another baby or to stop breaking child labor laws. I will choose not to pursue discussing those details in this type of forum. The film was very much into shooting and many scenes had been already shot with Dashiell Coleman in them. I left and drove back to Asheville, North Carolina after a brief stop off at the Penland School of the Arts. That would prove in the future to become a very important side trip which at some time I will be discussing and sharing with you all later on here. I finally got the call from the Winter People Team who agreed to provide individual transportation to the mother, Mickey Coleman and her son, Dashiell Coleman who was 6 months old at the time of the filming. They made other provisions for the baby and his mother which is a good thing because the Film Winter People was finally finished in the winter of 1987 1988. This film is based on a story from the novel by the Asheville Native, John Ehle called The Winter People. John Ehle who was born in Asheville, North Carolina has written numerous novels based on the Appalachian Region and Our People. Hes married to the British Actress Rosemary Harris. They have a daughter named Jennifer Ehle. Jennifer Ehle is an actress. John Ehle was former Governor, Terry Sanfords Administrative Assistant in the early 1960s while he was serving as Governor of North Carolina, before becoming the President of Duke University and eventually a North Carolina State Senator in Washington, D.C. John Ehle owns a cabin around Penland School of the Arts near Spruce Pine, North Carolina, and other additional residences in Winston Salem, N.C., NYC and Great Britain.
