Reposting from a very good friend of mine who is a teacher.. Had to repost as I couldnt agree with her more: Okay, I have had enough, I must go on a rant. Judge me as you wish, and realize that any rude rebukes will just be deleted. This is my wall. Common Core State Standards are just that STANDARDS. They are the teaching objectives that guide the teaching...the Commom Core State part of that title is that states are trying to be uniform in what they teach at what age. So a child who moves from Illinois to Mississippi has learned the same standards and can pass the tests. As it is currently, all states are different. What we learn in 7th grade in Mississippi or Georgia may not be taught until 8th grade in Illinois or Louisiana. The standards is a list of standards...not what we must read, what we must write, not what curriculum we must teach. Common Core is not curriculum! Curriculum is decided by the individual school systems. Are there liberal peddling books being used? Yes. But that was not deemed by the CCSS. That was someone buying into a company selling their ideology. And as far as it is proving bad...It hasnt even fully rolled out yet. Most states are still taking the same high stakes tests they have been taking for the last 12 years. They have contracts and accountability. For instance, Mississippi will not even be fully implemented until 2015...so how exactly is it, that if we havent even used the testing yet, do we know the results? I realize in Facebook world where people love their propaganda I am in the minority, but I am teaching to the standards and 1) they are virtually the same as we have always taught, just with more writing about the texts we are reading and 2)I already see the higher level of thinking my students do as well as seeing them actually engaged as opposed to being bored with mulitple choice test prep.
