Republican Presidential Candidate Kerry Bowers Response To The North Korean Cyber Attacks I want to respond to the North Korean cyber-attacks with a different perspective from that offered by many of those representing various political and private positions within our nation. I’ll begin by saying that with any freedom comes great responsibility and failing to act responsibly can have serious consequences; consequences that can extend far beyond the individual or group who perpetrated the irresponsible behavior. In the case of the Sony movie, it, and as I understand it to be without having viewed the entire film, depicted a scene that was disrespectful to a national leader. That disrespect was rendered with full knowledge of the potential for repercussions and to an extent that would take it well outside the realm of those who perpetrated the irresponsible behavior. And now, two nations who have been at odds for over 60 years have an even greater wedge driven between them because of one act of irresponsibility and for which some retribution has been delivered while more has been threatened. This is not the first time that the video entertainment industry has reacted, and appropriately so, to a threat for engaging in disrespectful behavior. The other was that, and on more than one occasion, when the Comedy Channel either omitted or blacked-out portions of South Park episodes that were disrespectful to the Prophet Mohammed and the Muslim people. The network, unfortunately, did continue with their disrespect for the only man who came into this world for the sole purpose of giving his life so that others may find salvation through his sacrifice, that being Jesus Christ. That disrespect they can get away with, at least on earth, because those whom they disrespected, all Christians, will not seek retribution for the infraction, but instead offer prayers for their salvation and forgiveness for their sins. The concerns that the theaters, having opted to not show the movie, is somehow a violation of American’s first amendment rights, and the opinion that another nation is controlling the actions of this nation, are without merit. They are meritless for the same reason you cannot yell fire in a crowded theater when there is no fire and expect that you will not incur some consequence for having exercised irresponsible behavior. The movie is a silly, factually-baseless production designed only to make people laugh at the expense of disrespect to the government of another nation; a nation too, that we have but a fragile, cease-fire agreement. If a person wants to be disrespectful in this nation, they certainly can be, but should do so only to the point that any consequence remains their concern. When someone exercises irresponsible behavior to the point it may jeopardize the well-being of others, then the line has been crossed and the perpetrator is both at fault and liable for any repercussion that may befall the innocent. Think of it this way too, while one may not respect a particular individual, they would be foolish not to respect the potential consequences from that individual were they to act irresponsibly and bring upon themselves, and potential innocents, the wrath of the one so disrespected. In closing, let me say that I pray that each American, including myself, will think before we speak or act in what may be interpreted as an irresponsible manner. It is one thing to say or do something responsible, be attacked, and then expect the support of your friends and allies, but it is certainly a different matter and with different expectations when one acts irresponsibly and disrespectfully. Let us make it our pledge to always be the dignified, responsible and respectful nation we should be and can be in order that we remain the exception in this world. Kerry Bowers
