#Rescheduling_Examinations : The government decision to reschedule exams is a student friendly move EDUCATION : >> The recent cabinet decision taken by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the conduct of examinations for all the classes of Kashmir division and winter zone of Jammu division in March-April 2015 instead of October-November 2014 is a wise decision. The Government must now carry on with this decision. Since long, the replacement of academic Oct.-Nov. Session by March- April session has been the desire of academicians. It will provide the concerned with a complete uninterrupted nine month time period for learning process visa-a-vis curricular/ co-curricular activities in the educational institutions. Out of the remaining three months of the session, the winter vacation period of Jan- Feb. will best suite the student community for making examination preparations at home and month of #March will be utilized for the conduct of examinations. Via #JkLatestupdates . > This way the whole cycle of session will be completed. The scheme thus adopted is not only #students friendly but is climate friendly as well. The decision, no doubt, faced unhealthy criticism from few quarters who said that 80 percent flood unaffected students must be examined well in time without caring for 20% #flood affected student population. > Some critics opposed the policy on the ground that the decision has rendered about one lakh teachers in private sector unemployed as the management has shown them exit doors for six months till March 2015. > Let us think over for a while and decide would the conduct of examinations in Oct.-Nov.2014 be a student’s friendly act in present conditions given the floods scenario? > The answer is no. The 9/14 floods caused havoc in the whole J&K state. No one could escape from its cruel hands. The closure of Jammu- Srinagar national highway and simultaneous shutdown of all the communication links compounded problems of people. > The residential #houses, #roads and #buildings, #commercial establishments, #health centres, #orchards, #farms and many other #structures were dashed to the ground. The education sector was not an exception to such devastation. > The educational institutions suffered heavy damages in the floods. The official figures reveal that about 6100 school buildings, of which 4600 belonged to public sector and 1500 to private sector, got devastated. Almost all the colleges particularly located in district Srinagar were worst hit in the floods. > The students hailing from flood ravaged areas lost their homes. The flood water either washed away their reading material or it got damaged during their makeshift arrangement process. Now one and half month has passed but the houses are not fit for habitation. The houses owners are not in a position to find shelter in their own houses, not to speak of ensuring studies of their wards. There are 205 flood ravaged government schools, which at present continue to be shut while 35 are being used as relief camps as per the information communicated by Director School Education to Greater Kashmir. Under such circumstances, there was no option left with the present government other than rescheduling its examination policy.
